The cold season is just around the corner, and while we look forward to cozy evenings and fresh air, we should also think about the health of our horses. Many horses are particularly affected by mallenders in autumn and winter - a skin disease that is not only unpleasant but can also lead to serious health problems.
What is mallenders?
Mallenders is an inflammatory skin disease that occurs primarily in the fetlocks. It manifests itself as swelling and redness. If left untreated, these can rupture and form crusts or seeping sores. The disease is promoted by damp conditions, dirt and poor hygiene. The risk increases, especially in autumn and winter, when it rains, is muddy and the horses are often in stables.
Why is autumn/winter critical?
At this time of year the ground is often wet and muddy, which puts a lot of strain on the horses' skin. In addition, the constant changes in temperature - from cold outside to warm stable air - can dry out the skin and make it more susceptible to infections. Horses with longer pastern hair are particularly at risk because dirt and moisture can collect there.
Prevention is key
To prevent mallenders, horse owners should take some important measures:
- Regular cleaning: Clean your horse's legs and especially the fetlocks regularly. Make sure to remove dirt and mud thoroughly. Our SkinFine soap is suitable for this as it has a soothing and nourishing effect on the skin.
- Dry and clean stable conditions: Keep the stable dry and clean to minimize the risk of skin infections.
- Exercise: Make sure your horse has enough exercise. This helps to promote blood circulation and strengthen the immune system.
- Physical health: Have a blood test done once a year to detect any nutrient deficiencies or metabolic disorders.
Mallenders treatment
If your horse is still affected by mallenders, Maukosan offers an effective solution. It is specifically designed to support healing of affected skin areas and dry seeping areas.
Application
- It is not necessary to remove crusts in advance as they will come off on their own after use.
- Spray Maukosan onto the affected skin areas and allow to dry, do not wash off.
- After 2 – 3 days (after visible improvement) apply SkinDoc or cod liver oil zinc ointment to keep the skin elastic.
Conclusion
Fall and winter can be challenging for horses, especially when it comes to skin health. But with the right prevention measures and effective treatment with our products, you are well prepared to successfully combat mallenders and promote your horse's health.
